Enjoying A Green Summer

This year, why not green your summer vacation? There are lots of eco-tourism destinations worldwide and domestic green lodging. Or, try lowering your carbon footprint by camping and enjoying nature. Better yet, forgo a vacation all together and take a staycation instead.

Easy ways to enjoy a "greener" summer maidbrigade.com

Leave the car at home. With warmer temperatures, bike, walk, or push your kids in a stroller. Get to know your city's public transit without waiting for the bus in bad weather.

Dry your clothes outside. Let the sunshine do its thing and dry your clothes on a clothesline or drying rack. Save energy and money.

Fire up the grill. Invite friends and family over for an eco-friendly barbeque with reusable cups and plates, clearly labeled composting and recycling bins, and homemade, local or organic food.

Deal with bugs safely and naturally. Bugs already in your house? You can get rid of ants with citrus, and fruit flies with beer. To keep mosquitoes away, plant basil.

Plan weekly trips to your local farmer's market. Support local farmers, lower your carbon footprint, and have delicious produce. What could be better?

Only use the air conditioner when necessary. If you have window units, only turn on the AC for the room you are in. If you have central air, turn the thermostat up a few degrees. It will make a big difference but still keep you comfortable.

Cool down in a kiddie pool. Reuse the water for your garden afterwards.

Choose your sunblock wisely. Use eco-friendly sunblocks and slather it on as needed.

Hydrate with tap water. Try not to buy bottled water. Use a reusable bottle and fill it up with fresh ice water instead.

Getting Back in Balance - Tips on Balancing Chores, Work, and Home

1.  Keeping a clean house can be tough, if you don't want to spend the entire day cleaning. When you and the kids are home all day, the house naturally gets messier than when you're gone. Keep the clutter under control by cleaning as you work.

Make a habit of integrating household chores into your movements around the house. Clean up toys as you make your way to the kitchen for a cup of coffee. Throw in a load of laundry when you pass by the laundry room. Fold it while you're on the phone. Throw the breakfast dishes in the dishwasher while your computer starts up.

Not only will this help clean up the existing clutter in your house, but if it is constantly on your mind, you'll find that you (though maybe not the kids) make less mess in a day home.

2.  It is easy to get off track when you have kids at home. Moms can get side-tracked with household chores or too much multi-tasking.  Particularly for self-employed work-at-home-moms, professional work gets tossed to the back of the line.

So begin each day by taking a 15 minute daily review. Look at the calendar for any appointments/phone conferences. Then ask yourself what must be done at the end of the work hours.

3.  Make a list and be realistic.  Try not to fill the list with things you cannot possibly get to.  Break complicated projects down into steps.

Make more than one list.  Put all those long-term things on another list.  You can also divide your list, separating work and home projects.

Give Your Valentine an Eco-Friendly Gift They Will Never Forget!

Here are some ideas to help you "go green" this Valentine's Day:

Enjoy Valentine's Day in the comfort of your own home!  Instead of going out to eat, stay home and cook a vegetarian meal with all organic ingredients that you both will love.

Skip the paper and send an e-card to your Valentine.  E-cards are a great way to cut down on paper and get the card to your Valentine on time.  This is a very easy way to let your Valentine know that you are thinking of them.

Buy organic chocolates instead of regular chocolates.  They taste great and are better for the environment.  Fair trade farming encourages sustainable farming and supports small farmers. Buy your Valentine a box or two of organic fair trade chocolates to show them how much you care. Not only will they appreciate the thoughtfulness you used in selecting a fair trade gift, but fair trade and organic-now that's over the top!

Buy a unique, organic t-shirt as a Valentine's Day gift.  There are companies online that have talented artists that create wonderfully unique designs for organic t-shirts.

Let your Valentine feel like a "queen for a day" and hire a green cleaning company, like Maid Brigade, to do the housecleaning.  Maid Brigade is a green cleaning company that cares about your health and the environment.  Your Valentine will thank you!

Maid Brigade House Cleaning Services wishes you a very Happy and "green" Valentine's Day!

Go Green this Fourth of July

Celebrate Independence Day this year and save the environment by throwing a little green into your mix of red, white, and blue!

Get outside and party before the fireworks.  Consider a daytime party and make the most use of natural light.  If your partying does run into the evening hours, consider soy candles to add ambiance without the expense or waste.

Ditch the Disposable Partyware.  Disposable plates, cups, and utensils are convenient for parties with a lot of guests, but they are not so convenient for the environment.  Do your best to use normal tableware that can be washed and reused.  Cloth napkins and reusable cups are other eco-friendly options.

Use Propane for grilling.  According to a study by the Environment Impact Assessment Review, LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) as a fuel, is more efficient than charcoal in its production and more efficient in cooking.  When purchasing a propane tank, make sure there is a trade-in option.  Most retailers will let you bring in an empty tank in exchange for a discount on your next tank.

Save and Reuse Decorations.  Make a centerpiece by floating candles in wood bowls with rose petals in them.  Arrange daisies in a glass vase.  Buy small American flags at the dollar store and plant them in with the flowers.  Reuse the flags next year.

Go Organic.  Serve plenty of organic fruits and vegetables along with the whole food dishes.  Avoid pre-packaged foods as much as possible to cut out the waste.

Use Large Water Containers.  Plastic water bottles are convenient, but they can add up fast.  Store water in large containers so family and guests can re-fill their cups.

Recycle!  One of the easiest ways to go green is to recycle your waste.  Be sure to put a clearly marked "recycle" bin out at your party.

Green your Fireworks.  Fireworks are hardly an environmentally-friendly activity, but they are a tradition.  If you plan to set off your own fireworks this year, be sure to use fireworks rich in Nitrogen.  They might cost a bit more, but they put out less smoke in the environment.

Give Yourself A Gift This Earth Day

Happy Earth Day!
Happy 40th Anniversary Earth Day! Awareness has never been greater.  "Going green" is a concept being embraced by children, schools, businesses, and families.

For Earth Day's 40th birthday, give yourself a gift.  Make a commitment to make simple changes that will help you save money, save energy, and save the environment.

Here are some things to think about this Earth Day:

About 70,000 people in the U.S die prematurely from heart and lung disease aggravated by air pollution.

Glass produced from recycled glass instead of raw materials reduces related air pollution by 20%, and water pollution by 50%.

Americans annually use 50 million tons of paper. This equals the consumption of more than 850 million trees.

Homeowners use up to 10 times more toxic chemicals per acre than farmers.

Turning down your central heating thermostat by one degree can cut fuel consumption by as much as 10%.

Insulating your attic reduces the amount of energy loss in most houses by up to 20%.

80% of the world's forests are gone.

Over 40% of all tropical forests have been destroyed and another acre is lost each second.

The U.S. has less than 4% of its forests left.

The U.S. burns 10,000 gallons of gasoline a second.

An average American creates 4.5 pounds of garbage a day.

Every ton of recycled office paper saves 380 gallons of oil.

40% of our waterways are undrinkable.

The U.S. has 5% of the world's population and 30% of the waste.

Energy saved from one recycled aluminum can will operate a tv set for 3 hours, and is the equivalent to half a can of gasoline.

The average American uses 25 gallons of toxic and hazardous chemical products each year.  Stock up on these eight natural earth-friendly ingredients and make your own green house cleaners for less:  baking soda, borax, distilled white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, lemons, olive oil, vegetable-based castile soap, and washing soda.

Maid Brigade house cleaning services would like to wish you all a very happy, healthy, and "green" Earth Day!

Go Green This St. Patrick's Day!

Green living is easy once you know what to do.  Just about every corner of your life and home offers many opportunities to be green, without requiring you to sacrifice comfort or convenience.  Choosing to be green is about improving our lives and the quality of living every day.  Being green not only serves the planet, but it also serves us.

Choosing to clean kindly with nontoxic and biodegradable products helps protect our freshwater supplies from contamination plus it prevents the buildup of chemical residues in our homes and improves indoor air quality.

Cleaning a home with eco-friendly cleaning products can also help provide a safer home.  Families that use green cleaning products, especially homemade green cleaning products,  have less to worry about when it comes to keeping poisonous chemicals in the home because most of the products are made with harmful ingredients like lemon.

This St. Patrick's Day, while you are thinking green and wearing green, why not "go green!"
