Cheers to a Successful Year! [Giveaway]

Happy 2014! Another year has arrived! One week into the New Year and I have already battled two New York blizzards, one case of the flu and a summons to jury duty!  It’s not the way I would have liked to start 2014, but on a positive note, look how much I have accomplished so far!

The start of a new year has always been an important time for me because it’s one of the few times I actually get to reflect on “me.”  Let’s face it.  Life gets busy, and being a devoted wife and working mother of three extremely busy children, my time for “me” has always been pushed to the side.  This year, however, I decided to make my resolutions (or “goals” for those that don’t believe in resolutions) all about me!  I am a caregiver at heart, which is why my family is taken care of first.  I am also a nurse, who takes care of others for a living.  The only person I forget to take care every now and then is me.

Then there’s the “time” factor.  My life has never been busier.  I am the first to admit that sometimes, especially after a busy day, the last thing on my mind is getting up to exercise!  Relaxing on the couch in front of the television does help me re-gain my sanity at times but it’s not enough.  Utilizing “me” time beneficially and learning to alter my life balance daily are lifelong goals of mine that I will hopefully accomplish sooner rather than later.

This year, I decided to focus on two resolutions that are important to me, that are attainable, and that I can (hopefully) incorporate into my busy lifestyle.  One involves fitness and the other nutrition.  My fitness goal is not necessarily to lose weight, but to tone up my muscles and re-introduce some sort of cardiovascular exercise into my life.  I am embarrassed to say that I used to run marathons back in the day and now, I am lucky I can run to the mailbox!   Signing up for a gym membership is not an option so my routine must be something I can do at home.

My second resolution is to SLOWLY alter my eating habits.  I do eat healthy most of the time but not as healthy as I should.  Am I ready to give up my Starbucks Grande White Mocha?  At 550 calories a cup, probably!  But I am nowhere near ready to give up the French Vanilla Creamer that I put in my coffee every day!   My love of sugar, sweets, and chips HAS to be altered.  Eating late at night when I work has to stop completely.  Learning new recipes and ideas for healthier snacks is a great place to start.

Altering my eating habits slowly and beginning an “at home” fitness program are two attainable goals that I feel I can accomplish.  The hardest part is making sure I put myself first in my life so I am able to attain my goals.   The caregiver in me will always be there — it’s a part of my being — but most importantly, the focus of my caregiving going forward has to include myself.  Learning to not feel guilty about putting myself first is crucial.  Staying healthy is also important, because, let’s face it, I am not getting any younger.

I read somewhere that it takes thirty days for a behavior to change.  I look forward to the challenge.  Even though I am starting my resolutions a week later this year, I am determined to accomplish them.  I feel positive, refreshed and focused more than ever!  Join me on this journey throughout 2014 and let’s accomplish our goals together! Stay tuned for tips on how to keep your resolutions this year.

Now, tell us on Facebook what your new year's resolution is for a chance to win a $250 cash prize! Here's the link: http://woobox.com/zou7dq

Good luck, and may 2014 be a successful year for all of us!

Jennifer Beals Joins Fight Against Toxic Chemicals

Actress and mother Jennifer Beals, star of Showtime's "The L Word" and the 1980's movie "Flashdance," joined Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families in Washington, D.C. this week to urge Congress to pass the Safe Chemicals Act.

The Safe Chemicals Act would put common-sense limits on the amount of harmful chemicals allowed in various products. While there are supposedly laws in place to regulate this already, there are no practical checkpoints in place to make sure the laws are abided by. In fact, the prevalence of certain illnesses with direct links to toxic chemicals has only increased in the past couple of decades.

Beals was also joined by hundreds of parents and a stroller brigade to demand that Congress take action on cancer-causing chemicals, many of which have been found in common consumer products ranging from household cleaners to children’s products.

Beals says she got involved in the fight against toxic chemicals in 2005, the year her daughter was born. She learned about all the toxic chemicals in children's toys, bedding, and other baby items. At a certain point, she says she got tired of sifting  through the Internet, trying to figure out what products were safe and what wasn’t safe.

According to Beals, the chemical industry would argue that tighter regulations would impede their economic growth. But Beals thinks that  with all of the brain power that is within the chemical industry, that they could use that intelligence and that acumen to create safer chemicals without impeding their profit margin. We couldn't agree more!

Way to go, Jennifer! It's nice to know that the movement toward healthy, green, nontoxic cleaning has such great support.

Do You Have House Cleaning Issues or Advice? Join Us Live!

Leslie and ILast week on Clean Green Talk Radio, I had the pleasure of co-hosting the "Green Clean Talk" radio show with Leslie Reichert, the green cleaning coach herself!  Leslie and I spoke about natural ways to repel pests such as mice, ticks, fleas, and much more.  The pod cast of the show also gives numerous ways to repel these pests naturally.  During the show we received a call from Ashley who was looking for an “all-purpose” repellent. I advised white rocks to repel snakes and we thought that an herb garden with basil, catnip, lavender and many other herbs by her pet door might be the answer.

Join Leslie and me this Tuesday, July 13th, at 9 AM EST, live on www.w4wn.com as we discuss different styles of cleaning!

Celebrate Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day! Think of the earth as you begin your spring cleaning endeavors. Before throwing anything in the trash, consider if it can be reused or recycled. Many companies are doing amazing work recycling used household and yard items.

Hazardous wastes. Local governments have designated areas and days for disposal of household liquid and solid hazardous materials. Cleaning chemicals, paints, oil and other toxic materials can be dropped off for proper disposal. Contact the EPA or your local government for information. Hazardous materials should not be poured down drain or dumped into septic or drainage systems.

Electronics. Most electronics, old TVs, computers, and GPS devices can be donated back to local electronics retailers. Many charitable organizations also accept electronics and will give you a receipt for your taxes. Many schools or daycare centers will accept electronics that are in working order. Most cell phone carriers have designated areas you can recycle old phones, batteries and accessories. Many charitable organizations will also accept phones. Be sure to clear your phone of all identifying data as well as pictures that may be stored in the memory.

Books. Libraries, schools and some hospitals take book donations. Your community may have a used book store or book exchange. There are many online book exchange programs with little or no shipping costs. Textbooks can be sold on separate sites specifically for academic books.

Craft supplies. Schools for young children are always looking for stockpiles of craft supplies. Whether it be an old bag of yarn or a half used bottle of paste, it will be welcome with open arms.

Toys. Most schools, hospitals, or even pediatric medical specialty offices are looking for washable (non-soft) toys in good condition. Even if they cannot use them within their own office, they can distribute toys to children of need. Day cares accept sand toys and other outdoor toys as well. Some preschool and elementary schools will even take old tricycles and bicycles (or training wheels) that are in working order.

Clothing and shoes. There are many places to donate clothing and shoes. Most provide receipts for taxes. Clothing that is in disrepair can be recycled into soft rags for cleaning and polishing. Old blankets and towels can be donated to local humane societies and animal shelters.

Wire and metal. Your local government will have listings for disposal of metals, but some can be recycled. Dry cleaners will take wire hangers. Some schools take metal buttons, beads and keys to hang in the trees and make wind chimes.

Furniture. Sell, donate or recycle. Some can be recycled around your own house and used for other purposes. Cribs can be turned into homework desks by taking off the front panel, raising to the proper height for the child and replacing mattress with a wooden board painted with chalkboard paint or black/green paint with cornstarch added. The old mattress can be added to a child's play room, fort, or given to the family pet for a raised bed.

Prescriptions. Glasses and contacts can be donated to charitable organizations. Many opticians will accept donations as well. Vitamin supplements and prescription drugs can be disposed of at the semi-annual National Take Back Day. The DEA and local law enforcement join together twice yearly for drug drop off. The next Take Back Day is on April 27, 2013, from 10 AM to 2 PM. You can call 1-800-882-9539 or look on the DEA website for details about collection sites in your area.

Maid Brigade Hosts Book Drive in Honor of "Reading Across America" Day

In honor of this year's "Reading Across America Day," which took place on March 1st, Maid Brigade is holding their annual book drive.

The book drive begins today, Monday, March 4, and will run for 6 weeks, through Friday, April 12.

About 25 franchisees will be participating in this year's book drive.  These franchisees will be collecting new and gently used children’s books for 31 different local organizations ranging from family or women’s shelters, children’s hospitals, child advocacy centers to missions and libraries.

This is the third year that Maid Brigade is hosting the book drive and many of the franchisees have participated all 3 years and continue to donate to the same organizations, building partnerships with them.  Some of our franchisees are also partnering with local organizations and placing drop box book collection bins at their retail locations or at community events.

Maid Brigade is also accepting monetary donations that will go to "Reading is Fundamental".

All books collected will be donated to the organizations in late April.
