Breast Cancer Increase in Young Women

In the Journal of the American Medical Association, investigators from the Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology program at Seattle Children's Hospital in Washington reported a rise of advanced breast cancer in young women for the past three decades. This trend is occurring in women between the ages of 25 and 39 in all ethnicities.

The statistics were drawn from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database (SEER), which is a project of the National Cancer Institute.  SEER is a registry of cancers of all types that have occurred in the United States since 1973.

The results showed 3 in every 100,000 young women nationwide develop advanced breast cancer.  This cancer can spread to the bones, liver, lungs, or brain.  There were 250 cases of advanced breast cancer in 1976 and 800 cases reported in 2009.  About 930,000 cases were studied in that period.  The increase could not be explained.  Further research into these findings is vital because advanced breast cancer is the worst possible diagnosis.  Once the cancer has advanced, it is an in curable disease.

The upward trend just might be the result of better diagnostics, which means more cases are detected because of better technology now versus 20 years ago, but researchers are still not sure.

The Latest Findings Associated with Allergies

A report published yesterday by the journal Thorax suggested that kids who eat fast food more than three times a week or greater are likely to have more severe allergic reactions.

Allergic reactions include eczema, rhinitis (hay fever), and bouts of asthma.

The study shows evidence of the possible harms of fast foods.  It does not prove that the foods themselves cause the problems because fast food eaters may have other things in common. The study does however give scientists new clues in the search for environmental factors that might be contributing to a worldwide surge in allergic disorders. Among the dietary suspects: Certain fats, salt, sugar and preservatives are among the dietary suspects.  More research is ongoing.

A Ban on BPA

A recent vote by Suffolk County Legislature has made Suffolk County, New York the first in the nation to implement a ban on retail receipts coated with the chemical BPA, which is linked to breast and prostate cancers and other disorders.

Paper for sales receipts is coated with BPA so that it reacts to heat to create a printed image.  This paper is used at gas stations, retailers, and restaurants.

BPA is a synthetic estrogen which can alter the immune system, cause cancer risks, and cause hyperactivity and reproductive problems.

In 2009, Suffolk was the first in the nation to ban the use of BPA in baby bottles and children's sippy cups.  Last summer, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration stated that BPA would no longer be allowed in baby bottles and cups.

Hopefully, other states will follow and ban BPA too.

Famous People Choosing Greener Lifestyles

In honor of August's Women's Equality Day, I decided to write about three eco-friendly celebrity moms who are doing their part in caring about our environment by living a green lifestyle.

After Jessica Alba's second child was born, she created www.honest.com, a website filled with toxic-free products made from safe and natural chemicals, that are safe for your family.

Jessica's site also provides information on her Honest baby products and household items.  She also works with her company and activists to drum up support for the Safe Chemicals Act, to help you find toxic-free products for your baby, no matter what brand you prefer.

Julia Roberts has created an unbelievably eco-friendly mansion.  She upgraded her existing Malibu mansion with sustainably harvested materials, recycled tiles, solar panels, and energy-saving appliances.  Celebrities are often the biggest culprits of our country’s pollution and waste, so Julia is making a big change, which will hopefully inspire fellow celebrities to do the same.

Michelle Obama is using her First Lady power to create a better earth and healthier lifestyles for all of us.  In a way to teach children about locally grown fruit and vegetables, Michelle planted a vegetable garden on the South Lawn of the White House.  She also wears environmentally friendly nail polish!

Celebrity moms aren’t the only ones who care about the environment. Activism is one of Brad Pitt’s favorite past times.  He is known for his contributions to building eco-friendly homes in New Orleans after Katrina hit. Colin Firth, who is partnered with Eco Age, works as a Global Ambassador to help families build bamboo homes around the world.  Cameron Diaz drives a Prius purchases carbon offsets when she travels.

There are plenty of celebritiesthat use their money for the good of our environment.  Who is your favorite celebrity?  Do they live an eco-friendly lifestyle?  How do they contribute to our environment?  Be inspired and get involved!

Make A Difference This Earth Day...

Celebrate Earth Day!!!

Why not take time out to reflect about the beauty of this planet we call home during this day.  Ask yourself this question, "Am I making a difference to enhance, protect and invest in the quality of life for future generations of this planet we named Earth?" If not, then begin this week by applying actions to a few green ideas and investments to this Planet.
Here are some helpful tips to get you started:
Save water by decreasing your shower time , or take a bath, which uses less water than a shower.

Get in the habit of brushing your teeth with the water off, and encourage your children to do so, as well.

Recycle junk mail, cell phones, paper products, plastic bags, and more.

Switch from paper and plastic bags to reusable bags and totes.

Forget the electric or gas dryer, and hang dry your clothing.

Opt for direct deposit, online banking, and paperless statements to reduce your paper usage.

Try your hand at composting (planting scraps from fruits, veggies, and coffee grounds outside), which will help create better soil and less landfill waste.

Don’t purchase disposable water bottles, but rather use recyclable (and refillable) beverage containers that you can fill with filtered water.

Unplug all of your appliances when you leave the house to save energy (and prevent a fire hazard).

If possible, take public transportation or walk.

Don’t use plastic storage containers, and try not to heat food within a plastic container in the microwave.

Keep one set of dishes at the office, (a cup, utensils, bowl, and plate). This will prevent you from reaching for disposable utensils, cups, and plates.

Save stained or ill-fitting clothing to use for dusting and cleaning.

Use rechargeable batteries.

Donate used items.

Purchase used items from thrift stores, garage sales, flea markets, and more.

Rent movies and borrow books, instead of purchasing.

If you are in the market for a new car, purchase a hybrid model.

Select products made of recyclable materials.

Buy groceries in bulk, as it reduces packaging and the number of trips you take to the grocer.

If possible, buy items that use less packaging.

Purchase locally produced food at farmer’s markets and even road-side stands.

Purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, instead of jarred, canned, or frozen.

Purchase organic foods, as they don’t contain pesticides and harmful chemicals, in addition to organic cotton.

Follow the celebrity trend and use cloth diapers, as opposed to disposable diapers, which cause landfill waste.

Select soy or beeswax candles, instead of paraffin candles.

Use healthy and environmentally friendly cosmetics, such as mineral-based cosmetics and natural bath products.

Make your own natural, eco-friendly homemade cleaners using vinegar, lemons, borax and baking soda.  Go to blog.maidbrigade.com for quick and easy cleaning recipes.

Maid Brigade Supports Reading Across America Day

The National Education Association's Read Across America Day is the nation's largest reading event, occurring each year on Dr. Seuss's birthday, March 2nd.  Every year, many activities like read-a-thons and storytimes are held across the country to sponsor children reading.  In 2010, about 45 million children and adults participated in this event.

In support of Read Across America Day, Maid Brigade is hosting a book drive to boost children's literacy.  The book drives starts today, March 2, 2012, and will run through the end of the month.

Maid Brigade will be collecting new and gently used children's books that will be donated to various charities and organizations.

How Many Chemicals Are Your Kids Exposed To Everyday?

According to the Environmental Working Group, recent laboratory tests reveal that teenage girls are being contaminated with chemicals commonly used in cosmetics and body care products.

Sixteen chemicals from four chemical families (phthalates, triclosan, parabens, and musks) were detected in blood and urine samples from 20 teen girls, ages 14 - 19 years.

Studies link these chemicals to potential health effects including cancer and hormone disruption.  These tests also indicated that young women are widely exposed to cosmetic preservatives, with 2 parabens, methylparaben and propylparaben, detected in every single girl tested.

Teen study participants used an average of nearly 17 personal care products each day, most of them unknowingly exposing themselves to higher levels of cosmetic ingredients linked to potential health effects at a time when their bodies are more susceptible to chemical damage.

Cosmetics and other personal care products are an alarming example of government and industry failures to protect public health.  Federal health statutes do not require companies to test products before they are sold.  As a result, nearly all personal care products contain ingredients that have not been assessed for safety and are not required to meet standards of safety.

Help your teens make healthy choices by educating them about the toxic chemicals in products they use.

Facts You Should Know...

Did you know....

Cleaning products were responsible for nearly 10 percent of all toxic exposures reported to U.S. Poison Control Centers in 2000, accounting for 206,636 calls.  Of these, nearly two-thirds involved children under six, who can swallow or spill cleaners stored or left open inside the home.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the air inside the typical home is on average 2-5 times more polluted than air just outside, and in extreme cases, 100 times more contaminated, largely because of household cleaners and pesticides.

The Janitorial Products Pollution Prevention Project reports that 6 out of every 100 janitors in Washington state have lost time from their jobs as a result of injuries linked to toxic cleaning products, particularly glass and toilet cleaners and degreasers.

In a 2002 U.S. Geological Survey study of contaminants in U.S. stream water, 69 persent of streams sampled contained persistent detergent metabolites, and 66 percent contained disinfectants.

Toxic Ingredients Found In Household Cleaners

Did you ever wonder about the ingredients that make up your cleaning products?  Since companies do not have to disclose all the ingredients in cleaning products, how do we, as consumers, know which ones might be harmful to use?

Here is a list of frequently found ingredients that can be toxic to you and the environment:

Ammonia is found in glass cleaners, floor cleaners and bathroom cleaners.  It is poisonous when swallowed.  Ammonia is a big irritant to the skin or when inhaled.

Diethylene Glycol is found in glass and bathroom cleaners.  It is poisonous when swallowed and irritating to the lungs.

Chlorine Bleach is found in a variety of cleaners.  It is very irritating to the eyes and skin and is an environmental hazard.

Triclosan is found in antibacterial cleaners and thought to be contributing to antibiotic resistant bacteria.

DEA and TEA are found in many products and used as preservatives.  When combined with nitrosomes, they can produce carcinogens.

Petroleum based ingredients are found in all kinds of cleaners.  They are very bad for the environment.

Fragrance is found in air fresheners and almost all cleaners.  Fragrance usually contains phthalates used to stabilize synthetic scents.  Fragrance is a known carcinogen and is a frequent cause of allergies.

1,4-dioxane is found in dishwashing and other household cleaners.  It has been found to be a cancer causing ingredient.

Formaldehyde is found in a variety of cleaners.  It is a known carcinogen.
